Kids' tennis lessons at David Lloyd Clubs are a fun and energetic way for children to learn the game. With expert coaching and age-appropriate activities, they’ll develop skills, confidence, and a love for tennis - all in a safe, friendly environment.
Tennis Stars is a fun-filled, progressive and structured tennis programme for young children; with development, fun, and fitness at the heart of everything. Starting off on mini courts, with mini nets and sponge balls, children will move through the levels as their game and skills develop.
The structure is based on coaching and competition in 4 stages: Blue, Red, Orange and Green with players progressing through a number of levels at each colour stage.
Each stage is designed using appropriate court sizes and equipment, so players can learn the game in a way that suits their physical size, emotional maturity and technical and tactical skill. With over 40 years of experience, our professional coaches deliver each lesson with variations in age and ability in mind, to keep the programme relevant and exciting to every player.
The Tennis Stars programme at David Lloyd Clubs has been expertly developed with contributions from two of the most respected figures in the world of tennis—Judy Murray OBE and Dr Anne Pankhurst.
Judy Murray, a national tennis coach with nearly 40 years of experience, is passionate about getting children into sport through fun, inspiring coaching. As the former coach and mother of professional players Jamie and Sir Andy Murray, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep understanding of how to nurture young talent. Judy has helped fine-tune the Tennis Stars content to ensure every child builds confidence, develops key tennis skills, and most importantly, enjoys learning the game.
Dr Anne Pankhurst, a leading coach education and athlete development consultant, has also played a key role in shaping the programme. With over 30 years of global experience working with tennis governing bodies, clubs, and academies, Anne focuses on good coaching practices and creating effective development pathways for players, coaches, and parents. Her expertise ensures that the Tennis Stars programme offers a structured, supportive, and age-appropriate approach to learning tennis.
Together, Judy and Anne’s contributions make Tennis Stars a truly outstanding introduction to the sport—designed to inspire, engage, and develop young players at every stage.
Our Tennis Stars programme is divided into 4 age groups: Blue (age 3-5), Red (age 5-8), Orange (age 8-9), Green (age 9-10). There are 4 levels in each colour - 1 is a beginner at that level and 4 is advanced.
Each of the colours represent different-sized courts that allow children to develop and learn relevant to their age and ability, giving them more of a chance to enjoy longer rallies, and develop good habits and instincts. The kids will use smaller racquets and softer balls that fit their size, strength and abilities.
From an initial introduction to tennis; learning the basics and fundamental ABC’s, to nailing the technique and tactics and competing in both team and individual events, our Tennis Stars programme will boost your little stars confidence and improve their skills as they work their way through the levels.
Do your little ones know their ABCs?
The secret to children developing the key skills needed for Tennis comes down to learning the ABCs; agility, balance and co-ordination. Our coaches design activities that teach these physical skills in a fun and creative way, based on each player’s age and ability.
From the ages of 3 – 14 years old, the physical ability of each player will vary. This is because of the different rates of growth, development and maturation (GDM) affecting the developmental age of young players. This includes different physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills, impacting how quickly they’re able to learn and compete.
With this in mind, our junior tennis programme has been carefully designed to deliver fun and well-structured coaching, relevant for children of all ages and abilities.

Each stage of our programme has specific criteria that children will work towards meeting. Once they have completed the criteria for that stage, they will move up to the next stage of their tennis journey.
At each stage of the programme, parents will receive our Parent Pledges - clear guides outlining the key skills their child will be working on, along with simple tips on how to support their progress at home.
