For over 40 years, we have led the way in health and fitness. What started out as a tennis club has grown into Europe’s leading premium health and wellness group.
Constant growth. Singular vision.
When David Lloyd opened his first Club in West London, he had a vision. To create a welcoming space dedicated to health and fitness for the whole family. Today, we stay true to his vision. Through passion, innovation and an unwavering focus on improving our Members’ lives, we’ve grown into a thriving community that elevates the everyday, every day.
In 1982, David Lloyd, Great Britain’s Davis Cup tennis captain, brought his visionary dream to life: a family-focused health and racquets club with a focus on tennis. The first club opened in Heston, West London, on a sprawling 123-acre site. A decade later, the business floated on the stock exchange. And by 1995, with 18 thriving clubs, Whitbread PLC acquired the chain for £200 million – a record-breaking transaction at the time.
Over the next three decades, we grew rapidly through strategic acquisitions and organic expansion. Notable milestones included acquiring Racquet & Healthtrack (1999), Cannons Netherlands (2003), Harbour Club Chelsea (2005), and two Amida clubs plus Odyssey Glory Mill (2006).
In 2007, we were acquired by London & Regional and Caird Capital. And in 2009, we merged with Next Generation Clubs – a group of family focused health & racquet clubs created by Lloyd and his son Scott a decade earlier.
In November 2013, private equity firm TDR Capital took ownership, injecting significant investment to fuel expansion. Since then, TDR has invested in developing and building the business through organic growth and acquisition, plus have increased new club openings each supported by a strong rollout strategy.
September 2016 marked a pivotal moment with the rebranding of our united portfolio under the new brand ‘David Lloyd Clubs,’ supported by a £4 million awareness campaign. Expansion soared in 2017 as we acquired 14 Virgin Active clubs in the UK, The Academy Spa and The Park Club in West London. Our reach extended internationally with purchase of the Malaspina Sporting Club in Milan – our first Italian club. And by 2019, we had broken into the German market with the acquisition of Health City Bad Homburg near Frankfurt.
We’ve continued to elevate our offering, acquiring the Meridian Spa Group in Germany and Country Club Geneva in Switzerland in 2020. In 2021, we expanded further in Spain with three clubs from the Accura group, bringing our Spanish presence to five. In 2022, we celebrated the opening of our 100th UK Club. As of 2024, we proudly operate 133 clubs across the UK and Europe, continuing our commitment to helping families lead healthier lives.
