December 2019

David Lloyd Leisure, the UK’s leading health, fitness and racquets group today opens its 100th UK club at Emersons Green Bristol. The club is David Lloyd Leisure’s third in Bristol which joins its long-established sites at Westbury and Long Ashton, and represents an investment of £11m and creating 80 jobs.

The first David Lloyd Club was opened in Heston, London in 1984, founded by former tennis star David Lloyd who had a vision of making racquets sports accessible to a much wider community of people, and created a pioneering concept of combining fitness and tennis, in a family friendly environment.

By 1995 there were 18 clubs in the UK, when the business was bought by British leisure giant Whitbread. Since its current owners TDR bought the business in 2013, it has invested heavily into the business, to bring the club count to 100 clubs in the UK, comprising 97 David Lloyd Clubs and three Harbour Clubs. In addition David Lloyd Leisure has 14 clubs across mainland Europe, in Holland, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany Ireland and Italy and one in India.

Local VIPs including Councillor Toby Savage, Leader of South Gloucestershire Council were treated to an exclusive viewing of David Lloyd Emersons Green.

At the heart of the club is a state-of-the-art 100+ station gym which will provide members with the best-in-class environment, equipment and experience to support them in achieving their health and fitness goals with the aid of gym instructors or qualified personal trainers.

The club will also provide a full programme of group exercise classes to cater for a broad range of tastes and abilities thanks to four group exercise studios: a hi-tech indoor cycling studio, High Impact and Mind & Body studios, plus a new boutique-style Blaze studio.  There is also an exclusive wet indoor spa, plus outdoor spa garden which has been designed to provide a tranquil haven where adults can de-stress and unwind.

Other key features include four tennis courts, which comprise three air bubble courts and one show court to provide members with unrivalled year-round tennis facilities. Also making a splash for members are the 20m indoor and 25m outdoor heated swimming pools, and for younger swimmers the indoor learner pool and outdoor kids’ pool.

The stylish Clubroom café bar offers a family zone and indoor soft play area for the younger ones and an adults-only area and business hub for those looking for some quiet down-time or to catch up on emails.

Talking about the opening of the 100th club at Emersons Green, David Lloyd Leisure’s CEO Glenn Earlam said; “This is a proud moment in our history.  Since our first club in Heston 35 years ago, the demand for premium family-focused fitness and leisure facilities has boomed and our business has gone from strength to strength. However our pace of growth has been significantly accelerated since our acquisition by TDR in 2013, during which time our total club numbers have increased from 90 to 115 through both acquisition and new build. We have ambitious growth plans for the future and have a number of significant opportunities in the pipeline in the UK, mainland Europe and beyond. ”
