£11m investment creating 80 local jobs

David Lloyd Leisure to open it's 100th UK club at Emersons Green Bristol in December

5th March 2019

David Lloyd Leisure (DLL), Europe’s leading health, fitness and racquets group announced today it is to open its 100th UK club at Emersons Green, Bristol.

Work has already started on the 2.3 hectare site, and the new club is due to open in December 2019 representing an investment of over £11m. Emersons Green will be DLL’s third club in the Bristol area creating more than 80 new local jobs and offering state-of-the-art fitness, racquets and health facilities for all the family.

DLL currently operates 114 clubs, of which 99 are in the UK, comprising 96 David Lloyd Clubs, and three Harbour Clubs in premium West London locations. The company’s fastest area of development however is mainland Europe and DLL already has 15 clubs across Holland, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Italy, France and Germany, in addition to its clubs in the UK. DLL continues to look for expansion opportunities across Europe, including acquisitions as well as new build sites.

In 2018 alone DLL acquired City Green Sporting Club (now David Lloyd Geneva); Health City Bad Homburg (now David Lloyd Bad Homburg) which is currently undergoing a €10m refurbishment; and reopened David Lloyd Acton Park (formerly The Park Club) in West London following a £9 million complete transformation to the existing facilities. This is in addition to a continuing upgrade and investment programme across the estate.

This followed a significant move forward in 2017 when DLL not only acquired 16 clubs including 14 UK clubs from Virgin Active, but also opened the third of its premium brand, Harbour Clubs, in Kensington, London. This latest opening however not only underlines DLL’s continued aggressive overall investment and expansion programme, but also the company’s belief that the UK still offers substantial potential for growth.

The new club at Emersons Green will offer premium health and fitness facilities for all the family. The centrepiece of the club will be the 100+ station gym, which will house David Lloyd Clubs’ cutting-edge gym concept with an unrivalled array of best-in-class equipment. There will be four group exercise studios; a hi-tech indoor cycling studio, high impact and Mind & Body studios; plus a new boutique-style Blaze studio. Exclusive to DLL and now offered in around half of all of its clubs, Blaze gives an intense workout burning up to 1000 calories in a 55 minute class. Blaze uses Woodway treadmills, strength, combat equipment, and is designed to significantly improve cardiovascular fitness and burn calories fast.

A 20m indoor and a 25m outdoor heated swimming pool will offer a range of activities including aqua aerobics, family swim times and quiet adult swim sessions. For the younger swimmers there will also be an indoor learner pool and an outdoor kids’ pool.

The new club will also feature three air bubble courts, plus an indoor show court offering members’ year-round tennis facilities.

Most importantly, family sits right at the heart of David Lloyd Clubs and in addition to the structured, progressive swim and tennis coaching, children can take part in the club’s after-school and holiday clubs offering fun and active childcare solutions for parents out of school hours. Sessions will take place in a dedicated DL Kids zone, and will be synchronised with the adult group exercise programme giving parents and guardians a break.

Finally, other facilities will include an indoor spa, plus an outdoor spa garden; a Clubroom cafébar with a family zone and indoor soft play area for the younger ones; and an adults-only area and business hub. A leafy outdoor patio area will offer a space for outdoor dining and drinking on warmer days and evenings.

Glenn Earlam, CEO of David Lloyd Leisure said; “We’re very proud to be starting work on our 100th UK club. We’ve come a long way since we opened our very first club in Heston in 1982, but this is just the latest step in our accelerated growth across Europe. We now have clubs in seven territories, but we are currently looking at a number of other markets in Europe, as well as consolidating our presence in existing locations. We are well on track to achieve our target of 150 clubs by 2026.”
