Nearly half of fitness resolutions don't make it past January

Treamills

A THIRD OF BRITS WILL HAVE GIVEN UP THEIR FITNESS RESOLUTIONS BY THIS WEEKEND

13 Jan 2023
  • Brits confess nearly half (45%) of fitness resolutions don’t make it past the end of January, with 1 in 10 resolution-makers quitting within a couple of days
  • New research from David Lloyd Clubs in partnership with habit forming psychologist Dr Josephine Perry, reveals that finding a type of exercise you love rather than looking for quick fixes is the key to long-term success
  • David Lloyd Clubs’ new Fitness Personality Quiz can help Brits find an exercise they can stick with beyond January

Friday 13th January 2023: New research from David Lloyd Clubs reveals that nearly half (45%) of fitness resolutions will not make it past the end of January, with a third (28%) of those who pledged allegiance to exercise this January giving up by this coming weekend.

With nearly a quarter of the nation (24%) faced with a lack of time, many look to unsustainable and sometimes gruelling quick fixes to lose weight and get fit rather than forming long-term healthy fitness goals.

One in three exercisers say that a lack of motivation is the biggest hurdle to making a proper commitment to fitness, meaning they can find all sorts of reasons not to work out; 31% claim to be too tired, a quarter (25%) are prone to blaming the cold weather, 1 in 10 (14%) say it’s too dark outside and 19% ’kick the can down the road’ and claim they’ll do it tomorrow.

However, research shows that Brits do want to achieve great results when it comes to fitness, with 63% of respondents agreeing that they set themselves really high fitness goals and 80% acknowledging that when they do complete a workout, they feel a sense of accomplishment. But despite these good intentions, these goals aren’t always achieved.

David Lloyd Clubs has partnered with health & wellness advocate Lisa Snowdon and Chartered Sport & Exercise Psychologist Dr Josephine Perry to help break this cycle and encourage the nation to form long term good and enjoyable habits instead of quick fixes which are easily broken.

Dr Josephine Perry believes that the key to a long-term commitment to health and wellbeing is finding something you truly love, so to help the nation stick to a routine that lasts beyond January, Europe’s largest health and fitness group has launched a brand new Fitness Personality Quiz allowing Brits to identify their own motivations and find an exercise they can truly fall in love with.

David Lloyd Clubs’ Five Fitness Personality Types include*:

  1. Lone Ranger: You’d prefer solo exercise that you do for the pure joy of improvement, where you can escape and recharge from your daily stress while still becoming fitter.
  2. Tribal Trainer: You’d be drawn towards group exercise classes or activities that you join, in order to connect and engage with others.
  3. Expert Exerciser: You’re goal driven - you are motivated by fitness tech, allowing you to measure your performance and track progress.
  4. Ready for Action: You’d love trying new workouts and classes, finding the joy in something fresh and new and seeing what is possible.
  5. Spark Seeker: Success lies in finding something where you don’t get compared to others and won’t be measured too much, so you learn to enjoy being in the moment and watching your self-improvement.

Lisa Snowdon, TV Personality and Health & Fitness Advocate said:

“Finding an exercise you love can sometimes be challenging but the good news is it doesn’t have to be. It’s really important to take your time and find out where your passions lie in the fitness world before throwing yourself into any old exercise that might be short lived.

“David Lloyd Clubs’ quiz showed that I was a ‘Lone Ranger’, someone who likes to escape and recharge from everyday life, which meant their signature class ‘SPIRIT’ and other activities such as yoga are perfect for me. After doing yoga on and off for years, the quiz supported what I love so it’s been really interesting to see what else might suit me and help me keep my love for health and wellbeing alive.

“We all have such busy lives, it’s really easy to make excuses not to invest in our own fitness and wellness, which is why it’s so important to find what you love doing so you never want to miss out!”

Dr Josephine Perry, Chartered Sport and Exercise Psychologist said:

“I firmly believe that there is a type of exercise for everyone. When you find the type you love you will boost your physical and mental health and have a quick way to get an injection of happiness. This is why I was so keen to work with David Lloyd Clubs to help the nation find their own Fitness Personality type so we can all maximise our motivation to exercise.

“The quiz takes into account the 3 key pillars of Self Determination Theory, allowing participants to better understand what makes them tick when it comes to fitness and which classes, wellness activities or workouts they might like to try in the new year.

“The Fitness Personality Guide should be used as a tool to help better the nation’s knowledge in the way we behave in connection to the way we workout; each fitness personality type has exercises, activities and classes which match up so everyone can Fall in Love with fitness the best way possible.”

Michelle Dand, Head of Fitness Programming, at David Lloyd Clubs said:

“In January, we know that many New Year’s Resolutions fail because people choose activities or exercise classes they believe are hardest rather than choosing something they will love. If you have fun, it’s far more likely to become a sustainable part of your routine and help you achieve your long-term health and fitness goals.

“Launching the Fitness Personality Guide is another step in our commitment to support our members looking for long-term wellness, as the guide shares a deeper understanding about our own individual fitness psychology”.

David Lloyd Clubs provides the perfect destination to stay fit and healthy this January and beyond. With state-of-the-art gyms, heated indoor and outdoor pools, top-class racquets facilities, well equipped group exercise studios, outdoor fitness and luxurious Spa Retreats, there is something for everyone to help them refresh, re-balance, relax and re-connect. Europe’s largest health and fitness group also offer taster sessions for members for a range of classes, allowing aspiring exercisers the chance to try a range of activities in their quest for their perfect fit.

Notes to Editors:

*The Five Fitness Personality Types

1 . Lone Ranger: You’d prefer solo exercise that you do for the pure joy of improvement, where you can escape and recharge from your daily stress while still becoming fitter. You are not driven by feeling you have to win or be the best but are motivated by the endorphins that exercise offers alongside physical benefits. You are happy to step outside of your comfort zone on occasion as this can be a good distraction from the stresses of life.

Suggested activities would be: David Lloyd Clubs Options: Gym-based workouts, meditation, SPIRIT(Yoga & Pilates Inspired Class), yoga, swimming, spa.

Or other activities; paddleboarding (SUP), walking, cycling, running, skiing or ice skating.

2.Tribal Trainer: You’d be drawn towards group exercise classes or activities that you join, in order to connect and engage with others. It doesn’t matter if you are brilliant at it, or still learning, in this fitness type you are all about the community, energy and motivation of being around others.

Suggested activities would be: David Lloyd Club Options: Pickleball, Paddle, Tennis, badminton, BLAZE (High Intensity Interval class), RHYTHM (Rhythmic style cycle class), BATTLEBOX (Outdoor Bootcamp Style Class) and IGN1TE (Combat Inspired Class).

Or other activities, netball, football, rugby or dancing.

  1. Expert Exerciser: You’re goal driven - you are motivated by fitness tech, allowing you to measure your performance and track progress. You set the fitness bar high and thrive off reaching your goals. Even when you do, you might not stop and celebrate – you’ll be too busy setting the next big target. You prefer to do things you know you are good at and trying something outside of your comfort zone might not come naturally. However, once you do try you usually work hard and get pretty good, pretty quickly.

Suggested activities would be: David Lloyd Clubs Options: CYCLONE (High Energy Cycle Class), BLAZE (High Intensity Interval class), Gym-based workouts (cardio and weights).

Or other activities; running, cycling, triathlon or diving.

  1. Ready for Action: You’d love trying new workouts and classes, finding the joy in something fresh and new and seeing what is possible. You have a strong exercise identity and don’t need to be able to do it perfectly to have a good time. You want your fitness to be at a level you could go off and try anything new which piques your interest, so keep trying new things to keep yourself motivated.

Suggested activities would be: David Lloyd Clubs Options: BATTLEBOX(Outdoor Bootcamp Style Class), Reformer Pilates, Padel, Pickleball or Gym- based workouts (cardio and weights). You might also enjoy outdoor swimming in winter, or brave the cold plunge pool and ice cave at a David Lloyd Clubs Spa Retreat.

Or other activities; Archery, Field Athletics (throwing and jumping), Ice Skating, Kayaking, Lacrosse, Paddleboarding (SUP) or Water polo.

  1. Spark Seeker: Success lies in finding something where you don’t get compared to others and won’t be measured too much, so you learn to enjoy being in the moment and watching your self-improvement. Group activities will allow you to go at your own pace, learn and build your confidence, to ignite a fitness spark you never realised you had. A bit more guidance from an individual PT is also a great way to build up your confidence, find what you love and help you truly shine.

Suggested activities would be: David Lloyd Clubs Options: Personal training sessions, Group exercise class taster sessions, swimming, Reformer Pilates, Aqua, Yoga classes, SPIRIT (Yoga & Pilates Inspired Class) or IGN1TE (Combat Inspired Class).

Or other activities; dancing, rounders or running.
