Tackling sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems

20/01/2010 in Hot Topics

At David Lloyd Leisure we recognise the impact that sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems have on our members, often keeping them away from their fitness regimes or preferred sports for a period of time.

This issue affects hundreds of thousands of people across the UK; from regular gym goers and recreational sporting types, through to professional sportspeople and athletes.  We have all read about footballers or tennis players being out of action due to injury but often we face similar challenges in our own lives.

Evidence shows that musculoskeletal injury is the largest case of absenteeism amongst the UK workforce, with back pain occupying the top spot and resulting in millions of lost days of work.

In both cases, the first vital step is to take professional and expert advice in order to establish the most appropriate approach to resolving and rehabilitating the injury or problem.  The right diagnosis and treatment is fundamental to achieving a successful outcome as well as working on injury prevention to reduce the likelihood of the problem reoccurring.

In the case of sports injuries the focus must be on rehabilitation as around 90% of all sports injuries are non-surgical.  It is widely recognised that the correct use of exercise can often be one part of a more detailed programme to get you back performing at your best, therefore our expert personal trainers can work closely with sports medicine professionals to create the best programme.  By taking a structured and joined up approach to rehabilitation, the process can improve overall resilience, flexibility, fitness and posture.

Working with our industry leading partners, Pure Sports Medicine, we are committed to prevention being better than cure, and encourage regular screening for physiological weaknesses that may lead to injury.  However where assessment and treatment is required we facilitate prompt access to their team of experts including doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, nutritionists, podiatrists, clinical pilates practitioners, sports psychologists, GPs and orthopaedic specialists.
