A Member's Journey – Lucy Bett

Every month we like to share a Member's experience with you, to explore how diverse our Membership base is here at Kings Hill, and to show how the Club supports many different Members in many different ways.

Motivation:

I injured my shoulder and was not able to play tennis. I was already on a journey to lose weight but didn’t really know how to continue without the tennis, so I had a Personal Training session and the rest is history!

My Story

I have been overweight all my life, ever since I can remember, and it has always been an issue which has made me unhappy and very self-conscious. I went to Weightwatchers over the years and lost weight, but I always put it back on – and more. I think that was because I was doing it for the wrong reasons and I was also very secretive about it. I was, and still am, very embarrassed and ashamed by how big I was and therefore it was very difficult to talk about. I was in denial about my size, ignored the comments as I walked down the street, and just put on an act of being happy.

When I joined David Lloyd Kings Hill it was to play tennis, and I had no intention of going into the Gym. I made the decision to book onto the tennis holiday through the Club, but knew that I needed to be fitter. For the first time I asked for support – from my tennis coach and from friends. I lost three stone before going to Crete, but injured my shoulder whilst there and so could no longer play. I was devastated.

Tom was doing my sports massages and suggested that I had a Personal Training session with him to replace the tennis. I took a bit of persuading but eventually I said yes and had a taster session. It wasn’t as scary as I thought so I decided to book a few more sessions. That was eleven months ago and I have not looked back since!

Never did I think that training would become the main focus of my life. Tom challenges me during our sessions, both physically and mentally, and makes me see what I am really capable of. I work harder when I train on my own because Tom has shown me what to do and how to get the best out of myself. Tom has given me a nutrition plan to follow and we have weight-loss targets that have rewards and consequences attached to them!

It has not been easy. There have been ups and downs, sweat and tears but this time my weight-loss is different. I am doing it for me and there is no going back. The fitness and nutrition advice that Tom has given me means that I have been able to change my lifestyle to ensure that I never put the weight back on.

Goals Achieved

Just going into the Gym was an achievement for me and the progress I have made over the past year or so has been massive. I am now so much fitter than I was and have probably added years to my life. I was terrified of running on the treadmill and said that I never would. I now run intervals at least four times a week and have completed a 5k Race for Life in 30m 33s and have entered an 8k race in November as my next challenge.

My biggest achievement is to have lost eleven stone in the past sixteen months and not to have put it back on. I still have more to lose, but with the support of Tom and everyone around me I intend to be at my target weight by the end of 2012.

Tennis Coaching Timetable – April-June

The new coaching programme began on 16th April. The majority of the programme remains unchanged with the following amendments:

· New Int/Adv Coaching and Matchplay course on Thursdays at 11.30am with Sean

· Wednesday Improver Coaching and Matchplay at 11.30am with Anthony will now be a weekly booking session.

· Watch out for the addition of Power Track – a new Improver-level technical coaching course looking at modern ways to create power in your strokes. This will be on Wednesdays at 10am with Keith.

Please see the noticeboard for timetable amendments over the June half-term.

You can download the timetable from the David Lloyd Leisure website. Please be aware that the Racquets' Timetable on the website covers a three-month period. It is possible that during that period timetable changes will occur in order to make best use of our court space etc. This means that the online timetable is not always 100% accurate. Please use master timetable planners displayed in the Club as your main guide. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Remember, our programme is your programme. If there is something that you would like to see on the coaching timetable then please pop in with your suggestion.

Fast Track and On-Track Tennis

Fast Track Tennis has been a huge success. Fast Track is a free-of-charge four-week course for Adult Beginners and re-starters.

Tuesdays, 9.30-11am with Shane – free / four weeks

Sundays, 2-3.30pm with Matt – free / four weeks

Members intimidated by the thought of stepping onto the court have been put at ease, thoroughly enjoyed the course and are now involved in regular coaching and free play activities within the Club. Health and Fitness Members can take part in the course for a fee of £25 that is refunded if they upgrade their Membership. No excuses now: it’s free and we even supply the racquets! Contact Reception for dates.

Following the success of Fast Track we now have a follow-on course called On-Track that will continue the progression of our players and ensure they learn/rehearse all basic technical and tactical aspects of the game. These sessions are aimed at Beginners and Improvers (who are coming back to the game).

On-Track consists of two blocks of six weeks, at the end of which we aim to move players into the Club programme. The cost is £50 for each six-week block. On-Track times and days are as follows:

Tuesdays, 9.30-11am with Matt - £50 / six weeks

Sundays, 3.30-5pm with Danny - £50 / six weeks

All sessions can be booked at Main Reception on 01732 222350. After On-Track, Members will go into the Coaching programme and will also have the option to start the new Power Track course.

Free Tennis Club Sessions

Come and play organised social doubles! We now have four free-of-charge sessions per week, open to players of Improver level and above. These are: Tuesday, 1-3pm; Friday, 8-10pm; Sunday, 5-7pm. We also have an Advanced Club Session on Sundays from 7-9pm.

Please note that all these sessions are on a turn-up basis with no booking required. Where numbers exceed court space players will be rotated on a timed basis. Please note that the emphasis of these sessions is social, and players will be expected to play up, down and within their own level.

Recently Joined or Upgraded?

If you have recently become a Racquets Member you will need to have a Tennis Welcome. The Welcome is a free-of-charge session with one of our Tennis Professionals and will give you a chance to hit a few balls, meet some new people, become aware of all booking procedures and obtain a Club rating which will enable us to recommend some activities for you within the Coaching programme.

Simply book your Tennis Welcome at Reception. They run on Tuesdays at 7pm and Thursdays at 10am.

Tennis Footwear

It is highly recommended that you wear correct carpet-soled tennis shoes on the indoor courts. This is primarily for your own safety but also for the preservation of the court surface. We have had a few injuries to players wearing incorrect footwear. If it is deemed your footwear is damaging the courts then you will be unable to play. Please see a member of the Coaching team if you need further advice. Furthermore, please report all damaged areas of court to a member of the Coaching team.

Looking forward to a great summer of tennis!

Sports Massage – New to Kings Hill

Sports Massage should play an important role in the life of any sportsperson, whether or not they are injured. Massage has a number of benefits: physical, physiological and psychological. Speak to Tom in the Gym for further details.

Benefits of Sports Massage and Personal Training.

Sports Massage and Personal Training have many benefits. In addition to helping you feel good, they reduce the heart rate and blood pressure, increase blood circulation and lymph flow, reduce muscle tension, improve flexibility, and relieve pain.

Sports Massage can also include pre-event, post-event and maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance and performance, lessen chances of injury and reduce recovery time. Athletes of all levels may benefit from Sports Massage. If you are looking for a way to improve your athletic performance, Sports Massage is for you.

Whether you want to look good for your wedding or a holiday, or simply struggle with the commitment required for a long-term exercise programme, Personal Training could be the answer.

Personal Training helps by providing structure, results, variety and motivation.

You'll start with an initial consultation to assess your current state of health and to define your fitness goals – to lose weight, improve posture, rehab or simply get fitter. This gives you an agreed starting point, and also a benchmark against which to measure your progress. A good Personal Training programme will be changed regularly, not only for variety but also to allow for continued progression.

Sports Massage and Personal Training go hand in hand, and there is no better way to achieve your goals in a realistic time frame than combining them.

Together they will increase the range of motion in your joints; decrease illness-related fatigue; calm aggressive behaviours; decrease depression and help to promote a healthy mind; help your immunity by increasing white blood cell counts; alleviate age-related disorders, sleep disorders, and many more emotional and physical problems.

Sports Massage also exercises and stretches weak, tight, or atrophied muscles; helps athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts; improves the condition of the body’s largest organ — the skin; increases joint flexibility; promotes tissue regeneration, reduces scar tissue and stretch marks; pumps oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improves circulation; reduces spasms and cramping; relaxes and softens injured, tired, and overused muscles; relieves migraine pain.

Family Splash

Family Splash times for May are as follows:

Sunday 13th May - 4-5pm

Saturday 26th May - 4-5pm
