A David Lloyd Finchley Member has realised a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run 100m on the Olympic Stadium track.
Safina Alam, 53, was one of several lucky winners given the chance to race on the track on Sunday 1st April before the London Games 2012, as part of David Lloyd Leisure’s Team Family Gold Challenge.
Safina was watched by a crowd of 20,000 people at the event – including family and friends, Team GB legends, celebrity ambassadors, and representatives from over 150 UK charity partners – which served as the key test for the Olympics.
After the race, Safina said: “I was very excited about the race and it started very well for me. I felt pure joy, and the athletes running in three months’ time should feel the same. This was a golden opportunity to be the first to run on the Olympic track and it is a dream come true.
“The atmosphere in the stadium was electric. Everyone was having a really great time,” added Safina, who didn’t let a knee injury stop her from enjoying the special event.
Safina, who attended the event with her husband Parvez, sons Yaser and Faraz and friends, is now gearing up for the Team Family Gold Challenge, which kicks off with fencing in May. “We are all looking forward to doing the Family Gold Challenge. I am keen to try archery.”
David Lloyd Leisure has joined forces with Gold Challenge, the UK’s only Olympic and Paralympic sport-based charity challenge, to give Members and their guests the unique chance to test themselves in three new sports – fencing, canoeing and archery – whilst raising money for the children’s charity Right to Play.
David Lloyd Leisure is the sole Members-only organisation to work with Gold Challenge to create a bespoke challenge, which will take place in Clubs across the UK from May to July. During what will be a unique year, we aim to give our Members opportunities to try out some different sports which they might not have experienced, whilst raising money for underprivileged children across the world.
Registration for Team Family Gold Challenge costs £80 for adults and £60 for children, with up to £15 from each registration fee, plus additional fundraising, going to Right to Play. For further information and to register, go to: www.davidlloyd.co.uk/challenge
