Dance with David Lloyd Exeter – The Tango

Dance with David Lloyd Exeter is back, and it's hotter than ever – a taste of tango...

If you have ever watched Strictly Come Dancing, you will have seen that the tango is one of the most thrilling and sexy dances around.

Argentinian Tango, which originated in the backstreets of Buenos Aires, is more relaxed yet passionate, and can be danced by anyone.

David Lloyd Exeter is now offering you the chance to try it out for free.

Get a taste of tango on Thursday 10th May, from 8-9pm, in Studio One.

Our teacher, Fernando Guidi from Vida de Tango, is a dynamic tango teacher from Argentina.

Fernando combines friendly charm with a passion for what he does, and an understanding of how to teach it in such a way that total beginners can pick it up and enjoy it.

He believes that anyone can dance the tango – even those with two left feet!

Places are limited for this session, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Family Newsletter

Read on to find out what's happening for children at your Club in May...

Welcome to our fifth Family Newsletter of 2012. May is a busy month for all departments, with the start of new courses and sessions for tennis, swimming and football!

All Stars Swimming

Our second term of the year has begun! If there are any queries from our current swimmers, please get in contact with Josh.

Our Swimming programme follows the ASA National Teaching Plan. Swimmers can join our core teaching programme from 3½ years-old, and start with a Stage One class. We run classes up to Stage Seven, with the learning outcomes increasing in difficulty at each stage. Below is a brief outline of the key criteria of each stage. Where does your child fit?

Stage One – Have good water confidence. Move 5m on their front and back with flotation aids.

Stage Two – Demonstrate safe entry to and exit from the water. Swim 5m on front and back.

Stage Three – Develop rotation skills and swim 10m on front and back with basic technique.

Stage Four – Kick 10m of all four strokes and swim a choice of stroke for 10m with good technique.

Stage Five – Demonstrate watermanship and sculling skills and be able to swim 10m of all four strokes.

Stage Six – Swim with rhythmical breathing on all four strokes, and swim a choice of stroke for 25m.

Stage Seven – Swim 25m of all four strokes with efficient technique, and swim 100m of quality stroke.

Think your child is close to achieving the next stage? Why not book some individual lessons to give your child’s swimming a boost?

Members are entitled to a free swimming assessment with our Swimming Co-ordinator, and following that a free taster in one of our group sessions!

If your child does not fall within these stages, why not try our Tuesday morning Parent and Child class for 1-3 year-olds, or our Parent and Baby class for swimmers under the age of one. Please book a taster session at Reception.

Our Swimming Squad swims on Wednesdays at 6pm for forty-five minutes. This course develops competitive skills as well as elements from synchronised swimming, water polo, personal survival and rookie lifeguard courses.

If you are interested in your child joining the Swimming programme or having individual lessons with one of our instructors, please contact Josh through Reception to arrange a free swimming assessment.

All Stars Tennis

Just a quick reminder that our All Stars term started on 16th April and runs until week commencing 16th July.

There are a limited amount of spaces available on the programme. However we have more availability on our Red Ball courses. These lessons are for children aged 8 and under, and are played with sponge balls on a court measuring 11m X 5.5m (similar to a badminton court). Mini Red tennis is a fantastic way to introduce youngsters into the sport. By using equipment tailored to their needs, they are able to have long rallies and compete against one another. The classes are fun, stimulating and help develop athletic ability and social skills.

For our older players (Juniors, age 11+) we run a free supervised match play session on Wednesdays from 5-6.30pm.

Our sessions are run by LTA-qualified coaches who work with the Lawn Tennis Association to keep sessions fun and current. Our aim for all our Juniors is to teach them a great skill, help them make new friends, and keep them active in a controlled environment.

If you are interested in your child taking part in our All Stars coaching sessions – not just Red Ball but Orange, Green and Yellow as well – then please ask at Reception for more details, or feel free to speak to a Coach at the Club.

DL Kids

Following the successful April football sessions, we are currently running a short course on Saturdays from 1.55-3pm. Please contact Reception should you wish to join the course.

With June half-term approaching, Holiday Active is in our sights, running from 6th-8th June. Come and join us for three fun-packed days, full of various activities. Holiday Active offers structured sessions, including swimming, in a safe environment with indoor and outdoor play. All children are catered for to give your child an interactive experience. Furthermore, the kids receive a healthy and fulfilling lunch from our DL Cafébar!

Book your child on at Reception and receive a 10%discount when booking for all three days! Ask Reception or any member of the DL Kids team for more information and a booking form.

Your child deserves an exciting and enjoyable birthday party, so why not have it here with us? We host a range of different parties, from "make and create" to a "pirates and princesses" theme. The children enjoy a two-hour party which includes food, party games and structured activities. All parties are organised and supervised by our enthusiastic DL Kids team. If you would like more information or to request available dates please speak to a member of your DL Kids team.

Our Summer Party will be held on Saturday 23rd June and – continuing the theme of our neighbours – you can show your support by dressing up in a Chief's or Brave's outfit.

The Club will close at 6pm in preparation for this event, and will re-open at 7pm.

Tickets cost £5.

There will be traditional line dancing, a live band and a BBQ (there is a cost for this).

Members may bring guests to this event, and tickets will be on sale from Monday 7th May.

Class of the Month

Try something new with our Class of the Month.

Aqua Fit

Just because it’s in the water, don’t be fooled. This class is harder than you think...

Although it is known for its therapeutic benefits for those recovering from injury, and for treating conditions such as arthritis, this is a fantastic all-round workout for anyone to try.

Here are some of the great benefits you get from exercising in the water.

Aqua Fit can aid weight-loss. Expect to burn between 400 and 500 calories in a hour's session. Exercising in the water you are 90% lighter, and it is low impact, so the risk of injury is lower, and there is less wear and tear on the joints. There is twelve times more resistance in water than in air, so you are actually aiding muscle development – making you leaner, more toned and increasing your metabolic rate. It increases cardiovascular fitness, helping maintain a healthy heart and lungs.

Exercising in water is also a great way to relieve stress: the effects are a bit like those of a massage. The cooler water temperature reduces the build up of lactic acid, meaning you are less likely to ache the next day. Aqua Fit is a functional form of fitness, strengthening and stretching in equal measures, to achieve a healthy body.

As well as all these health benefits, Aqua Fit is also a fantastic class for beginners, or for those who are a little shy.

The beauty of it is that it doesn’t matter what you are doing, because no-one can see!

If you thought Aqua Fit wasn’t for you, or if you are looking to add some variety to your usual routine and to see some more results, why not give it a try this month?

Instructor Caroline Dodd, who also has a popular Pilates class, is one of the Club favourites and is regarded as one of the best instructors in the area.

Classes are on Mondays at 10.35am and 6.45pm, and Thursdays at 6.30pm.

Book as normal, online or at Reception.
