David Wilson has been a Member since the Club opened in 1998. When David was seventy years-old he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This was a complete suprise as he regarded himself as one of the healthiest senior citizens on the planet!
After a series of blood tests and biopsies David's GP recommended radiation and hormone therapy. Both weakened David considerably. As soon as he was able, David returned to the Gym to build his strength. He also began a walking programme as, along with swimming, it was the least stressful way to get fit.
About two years after the initial diagnosis David had his last consultation with his Oncologist. It seemed they had caught the disease in its early stages. David was elated, and he then quickly turned his attention to thinking of ways to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, and how he could raise money for cancer research.
David decided to walk. "The Big Walk" is a remarkable account of a seventy-three year-old man's epic journey around England, and the thoughts that surface during those lonely hours of long-distance walking.
From the remoteness of the Northern Pennines to the unique geological features of the Jurassic Coast, and from the grandeur of the Lake District to the panoramic views of the South West Coast Path, it becomes fascinating terrain as David leads you along delightful coastal paths and through charming villages, depicting daily events in his captivating, easy-going style.
David is an inspiration to us all. His book is fantastic. In person, David is humble, gentle and absolutely fascinating.
"The Big Walk" can be purchased from Waterstone's in the Marina for £12.95. Pop along to David's book signing on 19th May at 11am if you would like to have a copy signed, or if you would just like to meet him and have a chat.
Well done David.
